Traverse City State Hospital
Also known as the Northern Michigan Asylum for the Insane and the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital, this stately complex of Victorian-Italianate architecture was originally established for the care of the mentally ill. Today, it is known as The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, one of the largest historic preservation and adaptive reuse redevelopments in the country. Visitors will find eclectic shops, restaurants, bakeries, farmer's markets in the summer and year-long activities.
